If you’re planning a day trip to the Susquehanna River Valley, we’ve got simple, one-day itineraries for different travel styles. 

A Day in Lewisburg 

Lewisburg is a charming, walkable town with lots of boutique shops and delicious food to enjoy, making it perfect for a day trip. Start your morning with a drink from Tastecraft Coffee. Be sure to try their famous wonuts — a cross between a mini-Belgian waffle and a donut. 

Next, spend an hour or two browsing some of our shops on Market Street. Check out the curated collection of used books at Mondragon Books, the art supplies and artsy gifts at Brushstrokes Gallery and the locally made art, jewelry and housewares at Artists & Artisans co-op gallery. 

If it’s Wednesday, stop by the Lewisburg Farmer’s Market to grab lunch or a treat and support local farms. If the market isn’t open, head to Silver Moon Restaurant, where you can buy any of the antiques or items on display while enjoying your food. 

In the afternoon, visit Purity Candy, which has been selling confections in Lewisburg for more than 100 years! If you haven’t yet found the perfect souvenir, visit Street of Shops, an indoor antique mall and recreated streetscape that also has its own homestyle restaurant or browse the four floors of antiques, collectibles and vintage treasures at Rollermills Antique Mall. 

Finish your trip with dinner at Elizabeth’s, An American Bistro. This eclectic, New American restaurant serves upscale farm-to-table food and has an award-winning wine list, the perfect way to celebrate a successful day in Lewisburg. 

A Scenic River Day Trip 

Enjoy a relaxing day by the river after which our region was named. The Susquehanna is the largest river on the East Coast, but too shallow for commercial use, which makes it ideal for recreation. Start with a 1-mile riverside walk along the Watsonville Towpath Trail and then enjoy the view from the Watsontown River Bridge. 

For an easy way to get out on the water, head to Bic’s Watersports and Outdoor Adventures in Milton. There you can rent kayaks, canoes or paddleboards, and they’ll transport you and your equipment to and from the river. 

If you’d rather let someone else do the paddling, take a one-hour ride on the Hiawatha paddleboat in Williamsport, while you learn about the history of the river as you relax and soak in the incredible views. Then, head to Lake Augusta to see the Adam T. Bower Memorial Dam, the world’s largest inflatable dam and a popular spot for fishing and all sorts of watersports. 

When you’re ready to trade paddles for a plate, head to Skeeter’s BBQ in Shamokin Dam for hand-pulled BBQ, craft beer and a front-row seat to the river. 

Outdoor & Nature Day Escape 

Our region is filled with beautiful outdoor areas that offer a perfect escape from your busy life. If you’re looking for an easy walk with gorgeous views of the Susquehanna River, Milton State Park has 3.5 miles of trails, with lots of picnic areas where you can enjoy lunch afterward. 

For a moderately challenging hike, Bald Eagle State Forest has 45 miles of trails to choose from, some winding through old-growth forest or beside mountain streams. Experienced hikers looking for a challenge should head to R.B. Winter State Park in Mifflinburg and choose one of their more difficult trails. 

After your hike, spend your afternoon at the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Millersburg. Wander through meadows and forests filled with birds and wildlife, browse the free gallery of nature-related artwork and let the kids burn off some energy in the Nature Discovery Play Area. 

If you’d rather spend time by the water, head to Faylor Lake in Snyder County to go kayaking, fishing or bird watching. After a relaxing afternoon outdoors, enjoy a homestyle meal at Rayauda’s Restaurant in Beaver Springs.
