Favorite Autumn Wines

An autumn chill is in the air, glorious fall colors are starting to show and shops around Central Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River Valley are already looking ahead to Halloween, Thanksgiving and even Christmas. (Gasp!)

But don’t look to far in the future! Take time to savor the scents and tastes of autumn!

Warm and seasonal savory meals paired with perfect wines will keep the impending chill at bay and bring an autumnal mood to help you enjoy all the offerings of the season. It’s time to choose some great wines from Susquehanna River Valley Vineyards and Wineries.

Here is a list of some of our favorites along with pairing ideas!

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is a complex red grape wine. A delicate and aromatic food-friendly wine, the best will showcase the flavors and aromas of its herbal, bell pepper and spice tones. It pairs well with portobello mushrooms, black bean soup, roast chicken, fish tacos and even pizza.

Broad Mountain Winery boasts their Rattling Creek Cabernet Franc from their Barrel Series.

Chambourcin is a deep colored and aromatic red wine often aged in oak to soften its acidity and complement its strong flavor. In the glass, flavors of black cherry, red fruit, herbaceous notes, black pepper, and chocolate are noted. Because of its strong flavor this red wine can be served chilled. Having an Autumn Barbeque? Chambourcin wines pair best with grilled meats like hamburgers, seared steak, or venison.

Whispering Oaks Vineyard’s Chambourcin Reserve is a nice dry red that’s medium bodied, lightly oaked, with a fruit forward and pleasant finish.

Chardonnays are loved for their creamy, buttery flavor and texture. A bottle pairs perfectly with rich seafood, lobster, crab cakes, clams or a sumptuous pork tenderloin with apples and potatoes. For vegetarians, rich fall vegetables like corn, pumpkin, and squash prepared with mushrooms and served with Chardonnay is a wonderful autumn treat!

Buddy Boy Winery & Vineyards

From the vineyards to the glass, it is all hands on at Buddy Boy Winery and Vineyards. Dedicated to producing wines with a unique, bold fruit, and wonderfully simple taste, their 2021 Chardonnay is a dry white wine with a smooth slightly buttery taste.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the world’s most popular light-bodied red wine, known for its red fruity, floral, and spice aromas and long, smooth finish.

In town for a football game? Fero Vineyards and Winery in Lewisburg is home to the Bucknell University Bisons. Aged in French Oak barrels, their Pinot Noir Bison Roots Blue pairs perfectly with any food you may find at a tailgate! Ray Bucknell!

Merlots are easy drinking reds that are often said to have a plummy taste with notes of chocolate. A Merlot is a flexible wine for pairing.  You can drink it with Italian dishes, especially ones with tomato-based sauces.  It is also especially good with the deep savory flavors found in typical fall foods like roast chicken, caramelized roast veggies, grilled mushrooms and cheeses. It’s also a good wine to use when you’re cooking, making a rich base for red wine sauces delicious on steak or fish.

Iron Vines Winery’s Dr. Merle Lowe is a medium bodied dry red with flavors of boisterous black cherry with a mocha finish.

Viognier is a food friendly white wine that pairs well with a wide variety of foods and cuisines. Its natural sweetness works well with seafood and shellfish, roasted or grilled chicken, veal, or pork, as well as the spicy flavors of Asian cuisine. Viognier is also delicious with pre-dinner charcuterie boards and vegetable and salad courses.

Shade Mountain Winery produces hand-crafted wines on their mountain vineyard which encompasses nearly 70 acres and ranks them at the top of the Commonwealth for independent wine grape growers. Their 2019 Viognier is a dry French wine with a delicious light, fruity aroma and hints of grapefruit and pear. Shade Mountain Winery hosts an annual Harvest Festival and Vintner’s Famous Pig Roast (on Oct. 8-9). Enjoy Shade Mountain wine and food trucks, while listening to great music, stomping grapes and enjoying the vineyard views.
