AUDITIONS for "Tiny Island" at RiverStage!

GreenSpace Center

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29 & 31, 2023

RiverStage Community Theatre is pleased to announce AUDITIONS for its next production, "TINY ISLAND" by Michael Hollinger! This rare gem of a play about sisterhood and the magic of Hollywood movies requires 4 actors: two excellent roles for women in their 40’s-60’s (approximately) and two excellent roles for teens or 20-something’s who each double as characters in both the 1950’s and 1980’s.

Auditions will be held for two nights, Sunday 1/29 and Tuesday 1/31, at 7:00pm at Greenspace Center, 815 Market St, Lewisburg. Actors may attend EITHER session, and will be asked to read scenes from the script, and should bring a calendar to indicate any scheduling conflicts between February 1 and April 16. Regular rehearsals will begin after Feb 12, and performances are April 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16.

PLOT DESCRIPTION: “As little girls, nestled in the tiny projection booth of their family-owned cinema in the 1950’s, Hazel and Muriel flew to exotic islands with their mother, lofted by the plane-like whir of the projectors. In her teens, Muriel found her first kiss there, underscored by the stirring music of a Hollywood romance. Now, in middle-age, Muriel returns to the fading movie palace where her estranged sister screens old films for a dwindling audience, and a new phenomenon in the 1980’s called a video store has forebodingly appeared across the street. When Hazel, bitterly separated from her husband, insists she wants nothing to do with her sister, Muriel confesses she’s been hearing voices—little girls’ voices, late at night—and begs Hazel to help her resurrect the cinema and her own failing marriage. A poignant, powerful play about the limits of love and the limitless magic of the movies.”

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS. This is a play with 4 exciting and BIG roles for performers! Although regular rehearsals will not begin in earnest until after Feb 12th, we are holding these auditions a little earlier than that to give everyone extra time with their scripts:

* MURIEL PALMER: A woman in her late forties/fifties. Grew up outside of Philadelphia, married her sister’s ex-boyfriend Norm. Did not go to college. Moved to Texas. Has returned home to offer to buy out her family’s theatre. Hearing voices at night.

* HAZEL BREEN: Muriel’s older sister. Married to Ray, but getting divorced. Took over as projectionist of theatre (that her father owns and manages) when former employee quit. Smoker, drinker. Went to Bryn Mawr College. Never forgiven her sister Muriel for past transgressions.

* MIKE / NORM: Teenage usher at the theatre in the 1980’s, and Hazel's boyfriend in the 1950's who becomes Muriel's husband later.

* YOUNG MURIEL / BRENDA: Muriel at age ~17 (high school junior/senior) who flirts with her sister’s boyfriend in the booth of the theatre and speaks across time to her older self, and Mike’s girlfriend in the 1980’s who is deciding where to go to college and who gives Muriel a graphic description of the plot of the movie Alien.

This production is directed by Jove Graham (director of Spamalot, Wonder of the World, Pirates of Penzance, and others at RiverStage) with movie projectors and set design by Peter Wiley, with visual design support from Andy Seal of Lewisburg’s very own Campus Theatre.
