Camping at Bald Eagle State Park Campgrounds to Resume May 15

Outdoor Adventure

May 15, 2020 to December 31, 2020

Bald Eagle State Forest

The Bald Eagle State Forest District facilities and campsites will be closed until May 15th to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The following permit programs will resume on Friday, May 15th, at Bald Eagle State Forest:

Camping Permits
Fuelwood Permits
Stone Permits

Stone and fuelwood permits can be obtained in person at the District Office’s entrance door or by US postal mail. Exact change or checks are required for stone ($10.60/2 tons) and fuelwood permits ($20/cord).

Camping permits can be obtained in person at the District Office’s entrance door, by US postal mail, by email, or by calling the office at that time.

No permit requests will be accepted before May 15th.

Visitors can still visit the State forest lands during the day. You can help keep State parks and forest lands safe and clean by following these practices:

Avoid crowded parking lots and trailheads
Use the bathroom before you visit
Bring a bag and carry out your trash
Clean up after pets
Avoid activities that put you at greater risk of injury, as there is limited staff to assist
Don’t hike or recreate in groups -- go with those under the same roof, and adhere to social distancing (stay 6 feet apart)
Take hand sanitizer with you and use it regularly
Avoid touching your face, eyes, and nose
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or flexed elbow
If you are sick, stay home

While facilities are closed, rangers, managers, and other staff will continue to work to ensure security and public safety, but messages will only be checked intermittently. For any emergencies, please call 911.

Primitive Camping
Backpack campers are permitted to camp in the forest without a permit if staying no more than one night in any location. Backpack camping does not allow for access to motorized vehicles during overnight stays. A permit is required if the backpacker desires an emergency point-of-contact or if a campfire is requested during the annual spring wildfire season. Please see the primitive camping brochure (PDF) for more information.

Motorized Camping
Bald Eagle State Forest offers 45 designated motorized campsites, defined as camping in or near the vehicle which continues to be used for storage or transportation. These sites have a fire ring, off-road parking, and a picnic table. A camping permit is required for motorized camping. Information on motorized camping regulations, obtaining a permit, and locations of motorized campsites can be viewed on the Motorized Campsite Map (PDF). Larger sites suitable for horse trailers and larger campers are marked with an “X”, while smaller sites for tent camping are marked with “<>.”

Motorized campsites may be reserved up to 90 days in advance. Site check-in begins at 12:00 P.M., and the permit holder must occupy the campsite listed on the permit within 24 hours of the booked arrival date. Check-out is no later than 12:00 P.M. on the end date. No more than two camping permits will be issued at any one time and no permits will be issued until those issued expire. A permit will not be valid for more than seven consecutive nights. Any individuals or groups who have received permits which total a sum of 30 days in a calendar year will not be issued more for that calendar year. A camping permit will not be issued to anyone under the age of 18.
