History & Heritage Events in the Susquehanna River Valley

The Susquehanna River Valley has deep roots in Pennsylvania’s early story and enduring traditions. From Native American tribes to colonial settlers, and from rural and small-town life to the rise of industrialization, there’s so much to learn about our heritage. We have a rich military legacy as well, and because of our strategic location along the Susquehanna River, forts and encampments here played an essential role in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, and local soldiers later served in the Civil War.

Museums & Historic Sites

Our history lives on through landmarks, architecture, and storytelling. Historical societies carefully preserve artifacts, photographs, and archival records that capture daily life through the years, and museums give visitors a glimpse of the Susquehanna River Valley’s rich past. You can learn about military life at the Fort Augusta Museum, the once-thriving industry of carriagemaking at the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, or life in the early 1800s at the Gutelius House Museum

The Warrior Run-Fort Freeland Historical Society brings history to life through immersive, interactive events, including colonial craft demonstrations and military reenactments.

Walking tours developed by preservation groups invite you to explore notable sites and architecture at your own pace, tracing Thomas Edison’s path through Shamokin or visiting regional stops along the Underground Railroad.

Explore our region’s coal-mining history on the Shamokin Monument Tour, or tour a real anthracite coal mine at The Pioneer Tunnel
