The 16th annual Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts, celebrating our heritage, will take place May 28th in Shamokin, PA.

On Saturday, May 28th, the day will start at 10AM at the stage, located at the intersection of Market and Chestnut Streets, with the National Anthem sung by Sharon Styer and an opening prayer. Entertainment will take place on the stage all day until 5PM.

From 10AM to 5PM, vendors and artisans will line Market Street and offer ethnic foods, children’s activities, artwork exhibits, and Shamokin memorabilia. Other attractions will include strolling musicians , interactive bug exhibit, a PA Woodmobile exhibit of the different woods in PA. There will also be a historical Shamokin horse-drawn wagon tour and a white magical pumpkin horse-drawn carriage with the princess of your choice. Both horse-drawn rides are $5.00 per person and start at 11AM. Time for cemetery tours will be announced at a later date.

The Shamokin High School building will be open with an exhibit in the gallery.  If open to the public, there will be self-guided tours and a movie of the 1939 and 1989 parades played in the quaint auditorium with its lighted glass ceiling. Take the marble steps and enjoy the stained glass window that proudly displays the letters SHS - a great photo opportunity for any one who graduated from this beautiful building. Some of the original brass door knobs bearing the letters “SHS” proudly adorn the doors in the building.

Above the library on Independence Street, visit the local history museum and enjoy more trips back in time as you peruse the memorabilia and see a replica of a miniature coal breaker. Other attractions will be available throughout the day.

Don’t forget to stop at the information booth at the corner of Arch and Market Streets to pick up your free festival brochures. There will also be memorabilia of Edgewood Park, Shamokin, Knoebels, F&S hats, books and shirts, Matinee Memories and much more for purchase.
