The Bucknell University SBDC helps business Start, Grow, and Prosper by providing entrepreneurs with the education, information, and tools necessary to build successful businesses.

Providing entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills they need to start and grow successful businesses in Juniata, Perry, Snyder, Union, Northumberland, and Montour counties.

The Bucknell SBDC offers confidential consulting at no fee to entrepreneurs and small businesses, as well as high-quality low-cost educational programs.

The SBDC is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), and Bucknell University

Hospitality Industry Roundtable

& New Opportunities in Tourism Marketing

Attendees will connect with each other and SBDC resources, and learn tourism marketing tips from Andrew Miller, Executive Director of the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau.

  • Applications and licenses needed to start a business
  • Different types of business structure (sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.)
  • Financing options and sources of capital, presented by Heather Buttorff and Nick Shively of M&T Bank.
  • Types of insurance a new business will typically need, presented by Sholley Insurance Agency.

So You Need a Prototype - Your Guide to the Jungle of Product Development

This workshop will explore misunderstandings about product development, the major obstacles to success, and the best ways to overcome them.

  • The real role of a prototype:
    Productive and fast ways to move your idea forward
  • Why a patent may not mean what you think it means
  • The realities of licensing your idea
  • Why 'we don't have any competition' is almost always self-deception
  • Why defining 'the problem to solve' accurately will help you

Presented by Ian Proud, Bucknell SBDC, Innovation Engineering Manager. 

In his career, Ian has developed products as diverse as electronics for playground equipment, blow-molded oil bottles, furniture for children, kitchen cabinets, and computer hardware.

Grants & Loans

Agricultural Energy Efficiency Rebate Program 
Applications due 6/30 - Helps agricultural producers reduce energy consumption through the use of energy-efficient technologies. Rebates are available for LED lighting, fixtures and controls; energy-efficient ventilation equipment; and energy-efficient milk pumping equipment. Rebates will pay 50% of equipment costs, up to $2,000 per category.

Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator Program - provides up to $2,000 grants to creative entrepreneurs, with priority to individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or persons of color (BIPOC) and those located in and whose work benefits low-income communities.

Small Business Advantage Grants - 50% matching grants, up to $5,000 to enable small businesses to purchase energy-efficient or pollution prevention equipment or adopt waste reduction processes.

USDA Value Added Producer Grants
Applications due 4/25 - Help agricultural producers generate new products, create marketing opportunities, and increase their incomes through value-added activities.
