Ned Smith Center for Nature & Art

In February of 1999 Marie Smith updated her will, leaving the legacy of Ned Smith and a substantial portion of his finest works to what is now known as the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art.  Marie did not stop there, knowing that Ned had sold a number of his paintings and others were given to Game Commission employees or simply donated to help charities raise money, Marie wanted to ensure the Center had the resources to “buy back” any originals that became available.  In that same will, Marie left a “restricted fund” to be used solely for that purpose:  to buy back Ned Smith’s originals.  This exhibit celebrates Marie’s foresight as many of these original pieces of Ned’s art were purchased with Marie’s “restricted funds”, and we welcome them home.
Once again, we thank you Marie!

If you would be interested in donating to Marie’s Art Fund,  sponsoring the purchase of Ned’s original works as they become available, please contact John P. Booth, Executive Director.

Special thanks to the Pennsylvania Game Commission for their generous support of the Ned Smith Gallery. Be sure to check out the “From the Collection of the Pennsylvania Game Commission” wall, featuring a rotating mini exhibit of Ned’s work, owned by PGC.

On exhibit in the Olewine Gallerry is the Perry County Council of the Arts' Nature's Palette.
Explore beautiful nature-inspired works by PCCA members in this special exhibition, Nature’s Palette.

In the Romberger Gallery view art by local artist Jennifer Becker. Her exhibit, Botanical Art for Native Gardens, showcases original watercolor paintings depicting insects and birds with host and nectar plants that are native to Pennsylvania and the wider Mid-Atlantic region.

The mission of the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art is to merge the arts and the natural world and foster a celebration of both.

All events and programs will move online, so check museum.bucknell.edu after your visit. As we look to science to tackle our current pandemic, history has shown that art can help get us through times of crisis by providing opportunities for reflection, connection, and inspiration.
