Buying Local

Caroline Owens, Owens Farm

Buying local is the best way to eat well, foster community connections, reduce reliance on  the industrial food system, and teach the children in your life where food really comes from.  But, how do you work food-gathering into your already busy life?  What's the right timing for seasonal food?  How do you store it?  Where do you find your farmers?

Caroline Owens from Owens Farm will share practical strategies for success,  based on  customer conversations over the 20 years that she and her husband have been selling grassfed meats.   Produce, dairy and meats will be covered.

Environmental Topics

Merrill W. Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy

Merrill W. Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy is a Lewisburg based non-profit land trust with the primary goal of establishing conservation partnerships with landowners interested in protecting their specific conservation values for their land.  We can offer a 20-30 minute program related to our history, successes and methods to help property owners achieve their goals in long term land protection.

Their affiliate organization, The Buffalo Creek Watershed Alliance (BCWA), can address its many efforts and accomplishments within that Union County watershed.  Among those projects are long term monitoring of Buffalo Creek from its headwaters to mouth, establishment of an acid waters remediation site at the headwaters and various stream bank protection/restoration efforts.

Various Business Topics

Thomas Rippon, McDonald's

"McDonald's and Best Business Practices", directed only to fellow business owners and managers, whatever the line of business.  This talk includes some discussion of operations, people practices, marketing, and community relations. While we do not disclose "trade secrets", there are general principles of good management that we can contextualize for any audience.

"Social Responsibility and the Business World". Giving back to the community is a fundamental part of the way we do business at Rippon Family Restaurants (doing business in Union, Northumberland and Clinton Counties as McDonald's). Building community is important, no matter what the scale of investment of time and resources, and that also is a more narrow topic. The Ronald McDonald House movement (we had a significant role in opening the House in Danville on the campus of Geisinger Medical Center) and Ronald McDonald Children's Charities are two ways we make good on our commitment to Social Responsibility. There are number of other related initiatives within our global network of restaurants that exhibit this wide commitment too, many of which are only poorly known by the public.
