Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau is dedicated to preserving and performing traditional hula, whose style descends from the island of O‘ahu’s renowned Ma’iki Aiu Lake. The Hālau also explores its roots in kahiko (ancient) hula as well as more light-hearted ‘auana (modern) hula. The ensemble takes the folklore of the Hawaiian Islands and through traditional hula, styling, music and chant, presents emotionally stirring performances that feature the traditional styles of “hula genealogy” and new choreographies. The company has won top honors at hula and chant competitions throughout Hawai‘i. Michael Pili Pang, kumu hula (hula master) and artistic director, has said the reason the company tours is to share Hawai’i’s “true culture. We’re trying to bring as much of Hawai‘i to the mainland as possible and not make it so commercialized. Because hula is tradition for us.”
