Sunbury YMCA Winter Coat Giveaway

Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA

This fall, over 600 Susquehanna Valley children and families in need will receive winter coats courtesy of the Sunbury YMCA Coat Drive.  For the 15th consecutive year, the Sunbury YMCA has partnered with local businesses dedicated to providing hope, happiness and warmth for children and families in need through the gift of gently-used winter coats.

Members of the community are invited to join in supporting the single largest YMCA community event of the year.  Donations of winter coats, scarves, hats, and mittens are now being accepted at our Y branches in Sunbury, Milton, Mifflinburg and Lewisburg.  While the YMCA is grateful for all donations, the greatest need in the Valley is for children’s coats. Financial contributions are also needed and will assist in assuring all children in the community will be warm this winter.

Donation Information:
For more information or to make a donation, please call Katrina Mouery at 570.286.5636 or visit our website at gsvymca.org

The YMCA is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization and all donations are tax exempt to the extent allowed by law.

Wayne Stump, Executive Director of the Sunbury Y, expressed special appreciation to Steininger’s Laundry & Dry Cleaning in Selinsgrove for cleaning all of the donated items again this year.  “We would also like to recognize the employees at the following organizations for helping us collect children’s coats: North Shore Railroad, Sunbury Motor Company, Zimmerman Motors, Brewers Outlet, Guigi’s Restaurant, Rita’s Bake Shop, Lackawanna College, Northumberland County Administration Center, and Groninger’s Insurance.”

“With local poverty levels hovering around 14%, local children and families benefit from this program in more ways than one.  A new coat allows families to stretch limited financial resources to other basic necessities like food and shelter,” Katrina Mouery, Membership Director at the Sunbury YMCA and Chair of the Coat Drive Committee said.  “When you can put a coat on a child in need, it can change everything for them.  The smile on that child’s face says everything.”

The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening the foundation of communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  Through these three areas of focus, the Y nurtures the potential of every child and teen, improves the nation’s health and well-being, and provides opportunities to give back and support our neighbors.  The overall mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.  Strengthening the foundations of community is their cause. Every day, they work side-by-side with neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.  Collectively, the Greater Susquehanna Valley Y serves 7,900 community members, 3,500 of which are children and teens.

Media is welcome to attend.
