Susquehanna Valley Chorale Announces 2019-20 Concert Season which features music of Bob Dylan and Queen, as well as traditional composers
Adult Singers Encouraged to Audition on September 10 and 17

The Susquehanna Valley Chorale (SVC) is pleased to announce its 2019-20 concert season of four performances. Community members wishing to audition for the Chorale may do so on September 10 or September 17 from 6-6:45 p.m. at 100 S. Third Street, in Lewisburg.

The season will begin on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 with Serenade to Music, the Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams at Zion Lutheran Church in Sunbury. A celebration of three superb works by the masterful Romantic Era composer, this concert will feature a soprano and baritone soloist. In addition to the title piece, the SVC will also perform Toward the Unknown Region and Dona Nobis Pacem. This unique program pulls inspiration from an iconic poet, playwright, and other poignant scribes.

The SVC will once again continue its popular holiday performance, Candlelight Christmas, on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sunbury. Candlelight Christmas, with special guest the Susquehanna Valley Youth Chorale, follows the 100-year-old tradition of Nine Lessons and Carols, originated at Kings College, Cambridge. This concert is consistently a standing room only success.

In spring 2020, the SVC will present a newly commissioned work, The Times They Are A-Changin’, a Dylan Oratorio on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22 at Rusty Rail Brewing Company in Mifflinburg. The Chorale is excited to perform in this new venue. The piece premiered in 2018 and features the music of Bob Dylan with a twist. Paired with other well-known songs stylistically, and accompanied by a chamber ensemble, this concert will certainly leave you knockin’ on heaven’s door.

As always, the final performance of the season will be the SVC’s Pops Concert and will feature the music of Queen and other classic rock hits of the ‘70s on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 at Weber Auditorium, Susquehanna University, in Selinsgrove. This annual season closer is frequently one of SVC's most POPular each year with a different theme and surprises, but always showcasing some extremely talented SVC members.

SVC Music Director and Conductor Bill Payn says of the season, “Our coming season is going to be brilliant. We know there’s always a big crowd for our December concert and I encourage you to try something new. We have such an experience waiting you with our spring concert, A Dylan Oratorio, based on words and music from Bob Dylan’s works. We are especially excited to present this work at a new venue, Rusty Rail Brewing Company.”

Tickets

A season subscription costs $70 and consists of four “freestyle” tickets that can be used at any SVC concert in any combination. Individual tickets range from $20-22 depending on the performance and $8 for a student ticket for all performances. Youth under the age of 12 are always free.

Adult Singer Auditions and Open Rehearsal
SVC singers represent a wide range of musical backgrounds and walks of life. New singers are welcomed twice every season through auditions with Conductor William Payn.

Regular auditions will take place on Tuesday, September 10 from 6-6:45 p.m. (rehearsal to follow 7-9 p.m.) at Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. Third Street in Lewisburg.

Once again, the Chorale will host an Open Rehearsal on Tuesday, September 10 at 7 p.m. This allows prospective singers to experience a typical SVC rehearsal before committing to auditioning.

Come early to meet the conductor, current singers, Board members, and follow along with the music provided. Then, you can schedule an audition for the following week on Tuesday, September 17.

The SVC has developed a mock audition video on their website, SVCMusic.org, to give prospective singers a sense of what the audition is like and who will actually be in the room.

Appointments are required. To schedule an audition, please contact Coleen Renshaw at 570-765-0637 or coleenrenshaw@gmail.com. Singers can also find samples of suggested selections for each vocal part on that webpage.
