2018 Summer Camps

Fishing for Families: Join us for a great day of aquatic adventures at the Ned Smith Center. Families are invited to experience the joy and excitement of fishing with up-and-coming anglers while also learning about the aquatic ecosystem of the Wiconisco Creek.
Participants will learn and practice proper casting techniques before fishing along the creek. Fishing tackle and equipment are provided. All participants must wear closed-toe, hard soled shoes that can get wet. Each child will receive a spincast rod and reel at the conclusion of the camp. Special thanks to our program partners Bass Pro Shops,
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Doc Fritchey Chapter of Trout Unlimited who allow us to offer the camp at a reduced fee.
Date: Saturday, June 2 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Age: 8-17
Fee: $18/student; parents are welcome and encouraged to attend this camp free of charge.

2017-07-21 19.37.03Shakespeare in the Woods Summer Theatre Camp:
Students will work in an ensemble setting with professional actors from Gamut Theatre of Harrisburg. Participants will enhance communication skills, imagination, and creativity while developing self-confidence as they study Shakespeare. Students will spend ample time working on voice and movement techniques while developing their acting craft. Guest actors and artists from Gamut Theatre will work with students enrolled in the camp to perform The Tempest which will be presented on July 20 and July 21. A portion of each day will include time for rehearsal of the script. The play will be presented on the stage of NSCNA’s DeSoto Amphitheater just prior to the 2018 “Shakespeare in the Woods” presentation of Macbeth by Gamut’s Harrisburg Shakespeare Company.

Fridays, June 22 and 29, July 6 and 13, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Friday July 20, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 5:30-9:30 p.m. (evening performance)
Saturday July 21, 5:30-9:30 p.m. (evening performance)

NOTE: All classes are held at the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art The Shakespeare in the Woods Summer Workshop is funded, in part, by the Lenker Fund of the Foundation for Enhancing Communities.

DSC_0193Outdoor Adventure Camp: The adventure continues this summer with a camp filled with excitement, exploration and survival skills. Campers will experience the woods and trails of NSCNA’s property while learning basic survival techniques. Be prepared to go outdoors, get dirty and have a great time.
Date: Wednesday, July 11 and Thursday, July 12, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Age: 9-14
Fee: $70 per student

Picture 332Junior Naturalist Camp: Learn and hone in on the skills, techniques and experiences used by Ned Smith himself as he observed the natural world. Students will also create and utilize nature journals to express their thoughts, conclusions, and observations. Students will have the opportunity to observe hummingbird banding and learn about night lighting, a way to attract moths at night. Become a NSCNA summer camp naturalist and immerse yourself in the natural world.
Date: Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Age: 10-16
Fee $70 per student

camps 36Geology Rocks!: Learn about some of the most common but most unique objects on earth: rocks. Through hands on activities, students will learn about local geology and rock formations, as well as geology around the globe. Come learn about the natural history and importance of geology and discover that this camp rocks.
Date: Wednesday, August 8, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Age: 9-14
Fee: $40 per student

Grandparent and Me Camps

Choose ONE OF TWO sessions for either of the Grandparent and Me camps. The same material will be covered in each session. To help facilitate the shared learning experience, each adult is limited to bringing two children to camp.

Firefly Camp: Fireflies are a magical addition to summer for both children and adults. They light up evening fields and our imagination with dazzling displays of light. In this camp, we will learn more about Pennsylvania’s state insect and light up our day with firefly crafts and live specimens.
Date: Wednesday, June 20, 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday, June 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Age: 4-8 with an older adult, grandparents are especially welcome.
Fee: $13 per person

Art in Motion Summer Camp: Dress comfortably as we move and groove together, telling stories and creating art with many different parts of our body. We will challenge ourselves with fun breathing exercises, invent our own yoga poses and end with a relaxation story. Flexible bodies are NOT required, only flexible minds. This will be an outdoor camp.
Date: Monday, August 6, 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 7, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Age: 4-8 with an older adult, grandparents are especially welcome.
Fee: $13 per person
