Homeschool Day: Pennsylvania’s Environmental Heroes
10:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Do you know who Rachel Carson, Gifford Pinchot, J. Horace McFarland, Maurice Goddard, or Ralph Abele was?  These people and others, who shared a love of nature and the environment, played important roles in protecting the natural resources of Pennsylvania.

You can’t really understand many of the environmental issues we face today, without understanding the people and events that shape our commonwealth’s environmental heritage. Students and parents are encouraged to learn more about these folks during this homeschool day for kids in 4th through 12th  grades. We will be reading stories, viewing videos, doing some hands on activities and sharing what we found out about these individuals during student led discussions.

Please pre-register by calling the office by February 28th for this program.

Pebble Puppies
1:00  PM -2:30 PM
Discover rocks and minerals during this program at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center.  A story and hands on activities are included in this DiscoverE program for kids ages 4-8 and their parents.  Please call (570) 966-1455 by Feb 25th to register.

Geology Rocks!

9:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Learn about Pennsylvania rock, mineral, and fossil resources during this hands-on session for folks over 9 years of age.  We will act out the rock cycle, make a “rock collection”, identify fossils and minerals, and have a geo-scavenger hunt!  We will also challenge you to profitably run your own “mine” while doing minimal environmental damage.  It’s not near as easy as it sounds (it is tempting to “eat” the profits)!  Pre-registration is required and must be completed by March 3rd  .  Please call (570) 966-1455 to register.  Please be sure to state which day you wish to attend.   Scouts ages 9-14 who wish to work on “Geologist” type badges are encouraged to participate in this 5.0-hour program.  Register early, only a limited number of scouts can be accepted.  School students, homeschoolers or anyone who just wants to learn more about PA geology are encouraged to attend as well.   Please bring a lunch and drinks.  Dress for indoor activities. This event is jointly sponsored by DCNR’s Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey and the Bureau of State Parks.  Instructors for this event will be Geologic Scientist Aaron Bierly, Shana Tritsch Geologic Consultant, and Environmental Educator Mary Ann Haladay-Bierly.  Participants are encouraged to bring along an interesting rock to “stump the geologist” if they like.
